A virtual power plant that charges when power is cheap and clean, and gives it back when the grid needs it.
2,400 illustrative batteries on one winter weekday · 15+ brands connected · Elexon-registered Virtual Trading Party
Battery makers
for an illustrative battery on a winter weekday, against the same battery on its factory settings.
Battery owners
off the bill at an illustrative site, from charging off-peak and keeping its own solar.
Installers and suppliers
of savings and flexibility revenue from one illustrative battery.
A 10 kWh battery through one winter weekday. Same site, same battery, same half-hourly tariff. Only the plan changes.
The battery stores spare solar and covers the site until it runs out. In winter there's little to spare, so the site buys at the going rate, peak included.
It charges at the cheap overnight rate, then covers the site until it runs empty at 18:00, during the evening peak.
It charges overnight and in the windy midday dip, holds the charge for teatime and buys nothing at the peak. The same plan's flexibility is traded.
Illustrative site: a 10 kWh, 5 kW battery and 4 kWp of solar on a half-hourly import and export tariff. The plan never takes the battery below its 20% backup reserve.
P415, live since November 2024, lets a Virtual Trading Party trade a battery's flexibility in the wholesale market, without the site changing supplier or tariff. Electryone is registered with Elexon as one.
Wind and sun are Britain's cheapest new power, but they don't keep to a timetable. Batteries fill up when there's power to spare and give it back at teatime, when the grid would otherwise lean on gas.
moved out of the evening peak in one winter weekday, across 2,400 illustrative batteries.
Every plan makes the most of what the battery can save and earn, inside the limits below. They are hard limits, not targets to trade off.
Each site sets a backup reserve, 20% here. The plan never takes the battery below it, whatever the market pays.
Solar covers the site before the battery charges from it or anything is sold.
Exports stay within each site's connection agreement, 3.68 kW in the example here.
Plans stay inside each battery's cycle budget. At one cycle a day, its 6,000 warranted cycles would take 16 years to use.
Owners can override the plan or boost the battery at any time, and the plan works around them.
Many small energy assets, such as batteries at homes and businesses, planned and traded together: each takes power when there's plenty and gives it back at the peak, and the grid pays for the flexibility. Each battery still serves its own site first.
Two ways. It lowers the site's bill by charging when power is cheap and covering the site when it's dear. Then the flexibility it has left is sold: in the wholesale market through P415 or to NESO through the Demand Flexibility Service, and to the local network operator.
P415 is a change to Britain's electricity trading rules, live since November 2024. It lets a Virtual Trading Party trade the flexibility of batteries behind the meter in the wholesale market, independently of the site's supplier. Electryone is registered with Elexon as a Virtual Trading Party.
No. P415 works alongside the site's existing supplier and tariff. Wholesale trading needs a smart meter that records half-hourly data.
No. NESO's rules bar a meter in a P415 BM Unit from the Demand Flexibility Service, so each site joins one or the other. Either can sit alongside local flexibility for the network operator.
15+ brands connect through their manufacturers' clouds today, with no new hardware. Tesla, FoxESS, Growatt, Sunsynk, Solis, Sungrow, Pylontech, Luxpower, Soltaro, Duracell, Hanchu and ECactus have full charge and export control. More are being added.
Every plan keeps the site's backup reserve, 20% in the examples here, and stays inside the battery's cycle budget so its warranty is respected. Owners can override the plan at any time.
